What a super program you have produced - it does all my backups in a fraction of the time I was spending on the task in the old days. Thanks a lot.

CD and DVD Troubleshooting

If you are having difficulty backing up to CDs or DVDs, try the following steps:

  • Make sure you have the latest version of ZipBackup. We are always improving ZipBackup so you should make sure you have the latest version. You can download the most recent version of ZipBackup at ZipBackup Download.

  • Make sure you have a Re-writeable CD or DVD drive. Not all CD and DVD drives can write to CDs and DVDs.

  • Make sure you are using new writeable CDs or DVDs. If the CD or DVD you are trying to write to has been written to before, they may not be in the same format that ZipBackup uses. We always recommend using new disks for backups.

  • Use CR-R, DVD-R, or DVD+R disks. ZipBackup can erase and write to re-writeable CDs and DVDs, but these are not nearly as reliable as write-once disks and often loose data in a relatively short period of time.

  • Try changing the CD / DVD Writing Method. Burning to CDs and DVDs is not an exact science and some CD and DVD writing methods work better than others with different drives. ZipBackup uses several CD and DVD Writing methods. We suggest you start with Default, but try Internal or Windows XP if you have difficulty.
To change the CD / DVD Writing Method,
    • On the ZipBackup Wizard, and click on the Advanced... button and select Properties.
    • Click on the ZipBackup CD / DVD Options tab at the top of the window.
    • Select the CD / DVD writing method you would like to use.

  • Give your computer time to mount the disk. Some CD and DVD burners require that the CD or DVD be ejected before the drive can read the disk. After ejecting and re-inserting the CD or DVD wait ten or twenty seconds before clicking on a ZipBackup Ok button to allow Windows to recognize the disk.

  • Increase the CD / DVD Buffer Space. ZipBackup will save some buffer space on each CD and DVD to allow for some overhead. The default is 10 MB, but you may want to increase this to 50 MB if you are having problems.
To Increase the CD / DVD Buffer Space,
    • On the ZipBackup Wizard, and click on the Advanced... button and select Properties.
    • Click on the ZipBackup CD / DVD Options tab at the top of the window.
    • Enter 50 MB into the CD / DVD Buffer Space field

  • Create a log file and email it to our help staff. If you still can not backup directly to a CD or DVD, ZipBackup can create a log file that will log the assumptions ZipBackup makes as it creates the backup and writes the files to the CD or DVD.
You can turn on ZipBackup's logging by clicking on the ZipBackup Explorer button and selecting Tools > ZipBackup Options... from the pull down menu. In the Options box, make sure Create Log File is checked.
This will create the file C:\Program Files\ZipBackup\ZBLog.txt that you can email directly to our help desk at .
For more information see the ZipBackup Log File page of our web site.
